Banks Drums Madison, Wisconsin-based funk band, RARE ELEMENT has developed a strong reputation for its high-intensity, live shows. The band's highly talented 7-piece roster, including a 3-piece horn section, bring massive energy to the stage at each performance. The band is influenced by classic funk artists such as Fred Wesley, The Meters, Clyde Stubblefield, and Herbie Hancock. See for yourself why Maximum Ink Magazine dubbed Rare Element as "Madison's Newest Super Group"! Chad Whittinghill (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Bryan Husk (tenor, baritone sax) first met in 2003 as members of the urban neo-soul band, VIBE SYNDICATE. Unbeknownst to them, they would spend the next 20 years playing side by side with some of Wisconsin’s finest funk and blues bands. For years, they honed their skilled working together with CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD's weekly Funky Monday shows. Later, the two would team up with Hammond B-3 ace Jimmy Voegeli and his blues powerhouse, THE JIMMYS. Over the years, they shared a common goal to create a band where this horn section could be pushed to its limit. Finally, in 2018, a roster of highly skilled musicians was assembled and Rare Element was created. Completing the horn section is Nat McIntosh (trombone). Nat is a long-time member and composer of the phenomenal YOUNGBLOOD BRASS BAND. Nat continues to record and tour internationally with Youngblood. The band also includes MAMA Award Winner Todd Phipps (keyboards, B3 organ) of THE BLUE OLIVES (and many other bands). Todd was recently honored with his addition to the roster of Hammond Organs endorsed artists! Longtime Madison talent, Joe Niesen brings his super funky guitar playing and song writing to the band. Joe has a long history of performing with many of Madison's finest bands. Driving the band is ultra funky bassist Rob Garza. Rob is also a longtime member of the Purple Veins Prince Tribute Band. The band's newest member is 2-time Grammy-nominated drummer Joey B. Banks. Joey is a 5-time recipient of the MAMA Awards Drummer of the Year as well as a highly accomplished music educator and former member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. Every week, we will concentrate on one specific instrument family. We will have a general session and then break into smaller groups for more in-depth instruction with various instructors. Stay tuned for more information on what instruments will be the focus and what days. The first group, ages 7-13, will meet at 10 AM; advanced and/or older students will attend the second group at 11:00 AM. If time allows, there will be a short jam session for kids after the workshop. Recognized in the vocal jazz performance and scholarship worlds, Ellie Martin is a highly respected vocalist, composer, educator, and Jazz studies scholar. She is currently the vocal jazz instructor at the University of Toledo, as well as Toledo School for the Arts. She performs a wide variety of repertoire from Brazilian music, American Songbook, Bebop, as well as her original compositions. A fearless improviser, Ellie delivers songs with individuality, passion, and honesty. Career highlights include performing at the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival, the Sunset Jazz Festival, and the Michigan Jazz Festival. She was the featured vocalist with the National Arab Orchestra in San Antonio Texas, and performed alongside jazz luminaries Geri Allen, Terri Lynne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding, the New York Voices, Jon Hendricks, and Afro Blue. Her debut solo album Verdant, was released in May of 2023. The project is a collection of all original compositions that reflect on her experiences as a woman, a mother and a cancer survivor, and features Grammy nominated pianist and vocalist Peter Eldridge, Israeli guitarist Ariel Kasler, bassist Kurt Khranke, and Costa Rican multi-percussionist Olman Piedra. From an early age, Ellie had a deep interest in jazz. In 2008 she completed her bachelor’s degree in voice at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where she studied with Ranee Lee, and performed at the Upstairs jazz club. In 2010, she completed a master’s degree in vocal jazz performance at the University of Toledo. While at UT, Ellie worked closely with the legendary lyricist, vocalist and distinguished Professor of Jazz, Jon Hendricks, and wrote her master’s thesis on his early life and the formation of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. In addition to Hendricks, Ellie studied with and performed regularly with legendary Detroit pianist, Claude Black, and bassist Clifford Murphy at Murphy’s jazz club. In 2016, she earned her PhD in Jazz Studies from the University of Pittsburgh, where she studied with Dr. Nathan Davis, and Professor Geri Allen. Her dissertation explored how vocal group Lambert, Hendricks & Ross mediated the vocal and instrumental roles in jazz, while simultaneously navigating race and gender roles at the height of the Civil Rights movement. Ellie has given several national and international lectures on the vocal jazz historiography, ranging from topics of improvisation, intersections between voice and instrument, vocalese, and the formation of vocal jazz groups. Cool School is a FREE weekly jazz improvisation workshop targeted towards kids (although anyone can attend) that gathers every Saturday morning. Every week, we will concentrate on one specific instrument family. We will have a general session and then break into smaller groups for more in-depth instruction with various instructors. Stay tuned for more information on what instruments will be the focus and what days. The first group, ages 7-13, will meet at 10 AM; advanced and/or older students will attend the second group at 11:00 AM. If time allows, there will be a short jam session for kids after the workshop. Doug White, piano and Friends: jazz duets Pianist, composer, arranger, band leader, organist and synth player, Doug White, brings joyful music to the Madison community and beyond. Ranging from a solo to a quintet, the new band performs all originals blending rock, hip-hop, folk, blues, and Latin with jazz harmonies. Doug White performs, composes, arranges, and leads bands in the Madison area.
